Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Also known as: Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are British Overseas Territories on the island of Cyprus characterized by coastal plains, Mediterranean shorelines, salt lakes such as Akrotiri Salt Lake, and low hills across the eastern Mediterranean region.
📍 Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two British Overseas Territories located on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. They consist of two separate areas—Akrotiri in the south and Dhekelia in the southeast—and are surrounded by the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. These areas have no independent civilian government and are administered by the United Kingdom as Sovereign Base Areas.
Akrotiri and Dhekelia’s geography varies between the two regions, including coastal plains, wetlands, and inland areas. Together they cover about 254 square kilometers (98 square miles). Akrotiri includes a large salt lake and flat coastal terrain, while Dhekelia features a mix of agricultural land and gently rolling countryside. Both areas have Mediterranean coastlines with beaches and bays, along with a warm, dry climate typical of the region. Their strategic location in the eastern Mediterranean has shaped their primary role as military bases, while the surrounding landscapes support limited agriculture and local communities.
