Netherlands

Bonaire is a Caribbean island municipality of the Netherlands characterized by arid landscapes, low limestone hills, salt flats, and coral-fringed coastlines.

📍 Bonaire is a Caribbean island located in the southern Caribbean Sea, just off the northern coast of Venezuela. It is a special municipality of the Netherlands and forms part of the Caribbean Netherlands, along with Sint Eustatius and Saba. Bonaire lies outside the main hurricane belt and has no land borders, being surrounded entirely by the Caribbean Sea.
Bonaire’s geography is characterized by a dry, low-lying landscape with a semi-arid climate and limited freshwater resources. The island covers about 288 square kilometers (111 square miles) and features flat terrain in the south, where large salt flats and lagoons are found, while the north is more rugged and hilly. Its coastline includes coral reefs that are among the most well-preserved in the Caribbean, supporting rich marine biodiversity. Vegetation is sparse and adapted to dry conditions, including cacti and shrubs. Bonaire’s natural environment and protected marine areas have made it an important destination for diving, conservation, and ecological research.
