Christmas Island is an Australian external territory in the eastern Indian Ocean characterized by rugged cliffs, tropical rainforests, limestone plateaus, and surrounding coral reefs.

📍 Christmas Island is an external territory of Australia located in the eastern Indian Ocean, about 350 km (220 miles) south of Indonesia. It is a remote island with no land borders, surrounded entirely by the Indian Ocean.
Christmas Island’s geography is defined by its volcanic origin, featuring a central plateau surrounded by steep coastal cliffs and narrow coastal terraces. The island covers about 135 square kilometers (52 square miles) and is heavily covered by tropical rainforest, which supports diverse wildlife. Its coastline is mostly rocky, with limited sandy beaches, and is fringed by coral reefs. The island is known for its unique ecosystems, including large populations of red crabs and other endemic species. Its remote location, dense vegetation, and natural features have shaped its role in conservation, scientific research, and limited settlement.
