The Galápagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago of Ecuador in the eastern Pacific Ocean characterized by rugged volcanic terrain, coastal cliffs, unique wildlife habitats, and surrounding marine ecosystems.

📍 Galápagos Islands are an archipelago located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km (620 miles) west of Ecuador, to which they belong as a province. The islands lie near the equator and consist of a group of volcanic islands with no land borders, surrounded entirely by the Pacific Ocean.
The Galápagos Islands’ geography is defined by their volcanic origin, featuring rugged terrain, lava fields, craters, and a mix of arid lowlands and more humid highlands on some islands. The archipelago covers about 8,010 square kilometers (3,090 square miles) of land spread across numerous islands, islets, and rocks. Its isolation has led to the development of unique ecosystems with many endemic species, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and diverse birdlife. The surrounding waters are rich in marine biodiversity due to the convergence of ocean currents. The islands’ distinctive environment and scientific importance contributed to their designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and they play a key role in conservation, research, and eco-tourism.
