The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean characterized by volcanic islands, rugged mountains, crater lakes, and lush green landscapes.

📍 Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km (930 miles) west of mainland Portugal. The archipelago consists of nine main volcanic islands spread across a wide area of the ocean, with no land borders and surrounded entirely by the Atlantic.
The Azores’ geography is defined by their volcanic origin, featuring rugged landscapes with mountains, crater lakes, lava fields, and geothermal activity. The total land area is about 2,351 square kilometers (907 square miles), with the highest point being Mount Pico on Pico Island, the tallest mountain in Portugal. The islands have a mild oceanic climate and are covered with lush vegetation, including forests, pastures, and farmland. The surrounding waters are deep and rich in marine life. The Azores’ remote Atlantic location, natural beauty, and unique geology have shaped their role in agriculture, tourism, and scientific research.
