Abkhazia is a partially recognized territory on the eastern coast of the Black Sea in the South Caucasus, characterized by coastal plains, subtropical forests, and the rugged mountains of the Greater Caucasus.

It is internationally recognized as part of Georgia, but is administered as a de facto independent state with support from Russia. It borders Russia to the north and the rest of Georgia to the east and southeast, with a coastline along the Black Sea to the west.
Abkhazia’s geography is diverse, featuring a narrow coastal plain along the Black Sea and mountainous terrain inland as part of the Greater Caucasus range. The territory covers about 8,660 square kilometers (3,340 square miles) and includes forests, rivers, and alpine landscapes. Its climate varies from humid subtropical along the coast to colder conditions in the mountains. The region’s natural features have influenced settlement patterns, agriculture, and tourism, while its strategic location and complex political status have shaped its historical and geopolitical significance.
